How Much Does a Church Wedding Cost? The 2025 Average Revealed

Getting married in a church was once the most traditional option for couples in South Africa — but these days, it’s become far less common. Many couples now choose wedding venues like wine estates, hotels, private homes, or outdoor locations instead.

That said, a church wedding can still be one of the most affordable and meaningful ways to tie the knot. Plus, many churches are rich in history, full of character, and absolutely beautiful — perfect for a heartfelt ceremony.

Just imagine: standing in a sacred space that’s been part of the community for generations, surrounded by your friends and family, locking eyes with your person as a minister or priest leads you through your vows. It’s personal, it’s powerful — and surprisingly budget-friendly compared to many popular venues.

In this guide, we’ll unpack how much a church wedding really costs in South Africa, what’s included, the differences between Christian denominations (like Anglican, Catholic, or Methodist), and which extra costs you’ll want to keep in mind before deciding if a church wedding is right for you.

What’s the average cost of a church wedding?

In South Africa, costs can vary just as much depending on the type of church and the kind of celebration you’re planning. While there’s no single fixed price, getting married in a church is often one of the more affordable venue options — especially when compared to private estates, wine farms, or high-end hotels, where the average cost of a wedding venue ranges between R40,000 and R150,000.

The total cost will depend on whether you’re having a full reception and meal afterwards, or simply hosting the ceremony at the church and celebrating elsewhere. As in other countries, you’ll also need to budget for everything outside the venue itself: outfits, rings, décor, photography, transport, the honeymoon, and so on.

Some churches ask only for a donation or a small administrative fee, while others — particularly if you’re not a member — may charge for the space, the minister, the organist, and cleaning staff. It’s a good idea to confirm exactly what’s included before you commit.

In South Africa, the cost of a church wedding will also vary depending on the denomination — whether you choose an Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Dutch Reformed, or another Christian church. The type of ceremony you opt for will naturally depend on your faith, background, and personal preferences.

How much does it cost to get married in an Anglican church?

In South Africa, there isn’t a nationally standardised fee for getting married in an Anglican church, but many local parishes charge a modest fee to cover basic costs. This usually includes the use of the church building, the minister’s time, admin costs, and sometimes cleaning, lighting, and sound.

If you’re getting married in your home parish and are a regular member of the congregation, you may be asked for a small donation rather than a formal fee. However, if you’re marrying in a church that isn’t your regular parish or if you’re not an active member, you may be charged a set amount — anywhere from R1,500 to R5,000 or more — depending on the church.

Be sure to ask what’s included in that fee. Some churches will include use of the sound system or organist, while others will charge separately. You’ll also want to confirm whether they’ll handle the legal paperwork or if you’ll need to coordinate separately with a marriage officer or the Department of Home Affairs to register your marriage.

How much does it cost to get married in a Roman Catholic church?

There’s no cost to getting married in a Roman Catholic church, as marriage is said to be a gift from God. However, they will ask for a donation of R1,000 to R3,000 to help with the general maintenance, running and upkeep of the church.

Before you run to book your Roman Catholic church wedding, there are a couple of stipulations. Firstly, at least one of you must be Roman Catholic in order for the two of you to get married in a Roman Catholic church. Secondly, you must give the church at least six months’ notice, which means you can’t use a Roman Catholic church if you’re hoping to get married quickly.

What extras do you have to be aware of with a church wedding?

The ceremony the church provides as part of its offering doesn’t include extras, such as an organist, verger, extra heating and bell ringing, nor the costs of other vendors you might want to include as part of the ceremony, such as flowers, a photographer and/or videographer.

Speak to your priest about which extras are available and what they cost, as this can vary from parish to parish. But here’s a general idea of common optional costs in South Africa:

  • Organist: around R500–R1,000
  • Bell ringing (if available): around R400–R800
  • Verger or church assistant: around R400–R700
  • Extra heating (in colder months or areas): around R600–R1,200

You may also be asked about an additional donation to contribute towards the general costs associated with the church; however, this is a voluntary donation.

Of course, none of these extras are mandatory, but you may choose to have them so you have music, the magic of ringing church bells and heating to warm your guests – particularly if you’re having a winter wedding. Churches can get pretty cold!

What about the wedding breakfast and evening reception?

While it may cost you around R1,000 to R5,000 to get married in a church in South Africa (or less, depending on the parish and whether you choose to donate), it’s important to factor in the cost of your post-ceremony celebrations too. The wedding reception — whether it’s a lunch, dinner, or full party — can make up a big part of your overall budget.

Churches typically don’t allow receptions on the premises, but there might be a nearby church hall or community centre you can hire. Alternatively, consider a local restaurant, guesthouse, wine farm, or hotel with a function room to host your wedding breakfast or evening reception with family and friends.

Depending on how and where you choose to celebrate, it will bump up the cost of your church wedding. But as we highlighted earlier, you’re still more likely to pay significantly less than the average South African wedding.
